One of the most common condition people seek Acupuncture is sport injuries.
Acupuncture/ moxibustion/tuina reduce swelling and shorten recovery time. Insertion of needle in acupressure point along the meridian, produce anti inflammatory reaction in the body. Sprain (ligament injury) and or Strain (muscle or tendon injury) are the most common injury among athletes. Most common symptoms are:
- pain & swelling
- Limited range of motion
- Bruises and discomfort
How Acupuncture/Chinese Medicine can help?
In Western medicine, first line of treatment are Pain killer medications. Because of side effects of all these medications, more people are attracted to alternative medicine for pain relief. In Chinese Medicine including Acupuncture in order to eliminate pain, we need to look at the root cause of each ailment. In Chinese Medicine/Acupuncture the etiology of pain is Qi stagnation, blood stagnation or both. There is a saying in Oriental Medicine, “if there is pain there is no flow of chi and when there is flow , there is no pain”Acupuncture opens up the meridian blockages, bring back free flow to body and restore health. Other factors such as diet, exercise and emotion can affect the healing process. Anti inflammatory and herbal formula enhance the recovery. Research shows:
- Acupuncture increase circulation, blood flow to injured tissue and shorten the recovery time.
- Acupuncture releases pain killing endorphins which also play a substantial role in maintaining serotonin and hormonal levels.
- Acupuncture decreases the scar tissue by increasing blood flow to the area. Post surgical treatment of elbows, knees and backs can benefit from Acupuncture and Electro Acupuncture.
- Acupuncture breaks the cycle of muscle spasms encountered with severe and/or chronic muscle pain. Cervical pinched nerves, whiplash and sciatica respond well to Acupuncture.
How Soon Should I Get Acupuncture?
It depends on nature of injuries, chronic vs. acute. Acute injuries (less than 3 months) need to properly be examined and investigated by x-ray and/or MRI to rule out a more serious condition. Acupuncture treatment can be start as soon as possible after examination.
My training include Orthopedic Acupuncture and practicing Master Tung/ Balance style of Acupuncture which in many cases results are immediate.
Unresolved sport injuries can become chronic and cause more stagnation and lead to weakness in muscle or tendons. Unresolved sport injuries need to be examined and investigated as well by x-ray and MRI to see if there is any tear of ligament of meniscus exist (in case of knee).
Acupuncture can repair tissue and bring back the flow to body as you can see in testimonial video. For further question and concern call our office for free consultation or fill out contact form. (831) 426-5002 Dr. Katayoon Hakim
