Chinese Medicine tips for healthy Spring
In Chinese medicine spring is the season of new hope, new life, growth and movement.
Due to loss of 3 friends and family members in past 3 months, I was not able to write and was difficult to envision the promise of spring. It was difficult to take part in the celebration of new life & new hope.
Today I went out to the garden, love my walks when it’s drizzling and dews drop off of the leaves. Symphony of spring is carried out by the birds and sweet fragrance of flowers filled the air.
I heard Kami (my dear cousin): “I am a rose. My heart opens at dawn”.
I heard Mazi (dear friend): “I am beginning of peace & tranquility. I am the memory of the happiness. I am the last gift of the living to the dead”.
I look up high to the sky, I heard Haji Ahmad (brother in law): “I am a part of joy & a part of sorrow”.
“This is the wisdom which man must learn”.
“The heart affections are divided like the branches of the cedar tree; if the tree loses one strong branch, it will suffer but it doesn’t die. It will pour all it’s vitality into the next branch so that it will grow & fill the empty place.” Khalil Gibran
We need to reflect on the beauty & vitality that is all around us in this season.
In Chinese medicine, spring is associated with Liver/Gallbladder.
Plan & have vision for future:
Liver opes into the eyes. In physical level, unbalances manifest itself in allergies, headaches and vision becomes cloudy. Drink chrysanthemum tea, eat gou ji berries and do eye exercises. Procrastination, not able to move forward & make a decision, lack of focus & direction are result of gallbladder unbalances. Be creative at work, home and in yourself and start new things. Sow the seeds now for fall harvest.
Stretch in the morning:
Liver controls tendons. Sciatica, shoulder/hip arthritis are common physical symptoms in spring. Be more flexible and active. Stretch in the morning to avoid injuries.
Liver detox:
Few weeks of detoxification will rejuvenate liver & gallbladder. Liver is just like a tree, is the only organ rejuvenate itself when it gets nourished. Eliminate coffee, alcohol, sugar and starches, eat plenty of greens with bitter and sour taste. Dandelion, watercress, burdock, radishes and dark green vegetables. Start your morning with cup of warm water and 1/2 lime juice.
Acupuncture:
Chinese medicine including acupuncture offer unique way to address many unbalances and disharmonies. There are acupressure points on gallbladder meridian when gets stimulated, gives ability to make better decision & judge wisely.
Happy Spring and call my office if you have any question or concern. With love and gratitude.
